According to The Wall Street Journal, early Tuesday morning several armed speedboats affiliated with Iran approached a United States-flagged oil tanker in the Strait of Hormuz and ordered the vessel to stop; an action assessed as taking place amid rising tensions and alongside a strengthening U.S. military presence in the region. According to a maritime security company, six fast boats equipped with heavy weapons approached as the tanker entered the strategic waterway and demanded that it shut down its engine and prepare for inspection. The tanker, however, increased speed and moved away from the area, and an hour later it was escorted by a U.S. warship. U.S. officials have confirmed that the armed Iranian boats attempted to stop the vessel and that the ship was ultimately guided to safety under military escort.
