Background and founding
Grok is a product of xAI, a startup founded by Elon Musk in July 2023. After Musk left OpenAI (due to opposition to its commercialization), he decided to build his own AI. Grok was announced as the company's first product in November 2023. The name "Grok" comes from the science fiction novel Stranger in a Strange Land and means "deep and intuitive understanding".

Technical structure
Grok is based on the Grok-1 language model, which was trained with tens of billions of parameters. To train its newer version (Grok-2), xAI uses a supercomputer consisting of 100,000 Nvidia H100 chips (known as Colossus).
Grok is currently available mainly to premium subscribers of the X platform and is known as a tool for news analysis, image generation, and coding.
