Finland’s undersea cable damage investigation has moved to prosecutors after four suspects were identified in the Dec. 31 case.
Finland’s National Bureau of Investigation has concluded its criminal investigation into damage to two undersea telecommunications cables in the Gulf of Finland and referred the case to prosecutors for consideration of charges.
Four suspects have been identified in connection with the Dec. 31 damage, according to the report. The referral marks a procedural shift from police investigation to prosecutorial review, where authorities will decide whether the evidence supports bringing criminal charges.
The case centers on damage to telecommunications infrastructure under the Gulf of Finland, a heavily used stretch of the Baltic Sea between Finland and Estonia. Undersea cables carry communications traffic, making incidents involving them a matter of public and regional security concern.
The referral does not itself mean charges have been filed. The next step is for prosecutors to assess the investigative file and determine whether to move forward in court.
