Telford and Wrekin Council says a new £10,000 grant will extend work to control willow growth threatening Muxton Marsh wetland.
More conservation work is set to be carried out at Muxton Marsh after Telford and Wrekin Council received another £10,000 to help control willow growth threatening the protected wetland.
The council said the money, provided by Severn Trent, would allow work to continue over the next five years at the marsh, which lies within Granville Local Nature Reserve. The site has been designated a Site of Special Scientific Interest since 1987.
The latest grant follows £39,000 already spent on efforts to protect Muxton Marsh, including £9,000 previously provided by the water company. The work is aimed at preventing willow plants from spreading through the wetland and drying out the fen habitat.
According to the council, contractors will use wide-tracked machinery to limit damage while operating in an area that includes wildflower grassland, marshy fen and wet woodland.
A council spokesperson said the marshland had struggled because willow plants had been drying out the fen. Councillor Carolyn Healy described Muxton Marsh as “the jewel in the crown of Granville Local Nature Reserve and home to valuable wildlife habitats”
The council has not detailed the full schedule for the next phase of work, but the new funding is intended to support continued conservation activity through the coming five-year period.
