Three off-duty Toronto police officers were arrested in Spain while on vacation, with two accused of sexual assault and assault causing injuries.
Three off-duty Toronto police officers have been arrested and charged in Spain while vacationing in Barcelona, with two accused by Spanish authorities of sexual assault and assault causing injuries, Toronto police confirmed.
Catalonia police said the case stems from a May 13 incident in a taxi in Barcelona’s Ciutat Vella district involving a sex worker. A third officer was charged with attacking an agent of authority, Spanish police said.
Toronto Police Service spokesperson Stephanie Sayer said in an email Monday that “the allegations are serious,” but did not provide further details, citing the court proceedings.
Spanish police said two of the officers were arrested on May 13. The third was located and arrested two days later in Palma de Mallorca. All three appeared in court on May 15, according to Catalonia police. CBC reported that Catalonia police had initially said all three were arrested on May 15, but later clarified that only one arrest took place that day.
Toronto police are not identifying the officers. Sayer said one officer has returned to Canada and has been suspended from duty with pay. The other two officers are expected to be suspended with pay when they return home in the coming days.
The Toronto Police Association said it is aware of the charges. In an emailed statement, spokesperson Meaghan Gray said that because the charges relate to an off-duty incident, the association had no further comment.
The matter is now before the court in Spain. Toronto police said they are unable to comment further on the charges.
