Abdulelah Al-Amri scored Saudi Arabia’s goal in a draw with Uruguay after earning a recall from a difficult spell with club and country.
Abdulelah Al-Amri turned a disputed path back into the Saudi Arabia team into a defining moment, scoring in the 41st minute of a draw with Uruguay after reacting quickest to a rebound from goalkeeper Fernando Muslera, according to Varzesh3.
The goal was Al-Amri’s first for the Saudi national team and gave the defender a prominent answer to months of criticism, selection doubt and pressure around his club future. The report described the result as a valuable one for Saudi Arabia in a difficult group and said Al-Amri’s strike made him the first Saudi defender to score in the country’s World Cup appearances.
Al-Amri’s return had not been straightforward. After his loan spell at Al-Ittihad ended and he went back to Al-Nassr, he faced a tense reception from some supporters. Varzesh3 reported that the strain dated back to before his loan move in the summer of 1403, when Al-Nassr moved him away from the team temporarily to reduce the psychological pressure around him.
At Al-Ittihad, Al-Amri rebuilt part of his standing and was involved as the club won the league and King’s Cup. But his return to Al-Nassr again exposed him to criticism before head coach Jorge Jesus backed him publicly after a contentious match against Al-Riyadh, saying an insult directed at one player was an insult to the whole team.
That support was followed by playing time. Jesus kept Al-Amri involved, worked with him on technical and disciplinary details and gave him room to restore confidence. The club revival affected his international prospects. Georgios Donis, the Greek head coach of Saudi Arabia, reconsidered Al-Amri after the defender had been left out of the national team camp in Esfand 1404 and missed friendlies against Egypt and Serbia. After assessing his technical and mental condition, Donis named him in Saudi Arabia’s final World Cup squad in May, corresponding to Ordibehesht and Khordad 1405, and after preparation matches against Ecuador and Senegal decided he was ready to start.
Against Uruguay, Al-Amri rewarded that decision with a composed finish and a solid defensive display against one of South America’s stronger sides. For a player whose place had recently been questioned at both club and international level, the goal gave Saudi Arabia more than a result: it gave his comeback immediate weight on the field.
