Ottawa police say a young boy died in hospital after a fall from a downtown apartment building near the University of Ottawa Monday evening.

A young boy has died after falling from a downtown Ottawa apartment building Monday evening, according to police and paramedics.

Ottawa paramedics said the child, described as younger than eight years old, was found with critical injuries beside a building near Laurier Avenue E. and Waller Street at about 6:45 p.m. He had apparently fallen “from a height,” paramedics said.

The boy was taken to CHEO, Ottawa’s children’s hospital, with life-threatening injuries. Police said he was pronounced dead in hospital.

Police are reviewing the circumstances, as they typically do in sudden death cases. The source report did not include further details about how the fall happened.

Homestead, the rental company for the building, told tenants in a message Tuesday morning that the building’s windows should have restrictors limiting how far they open and that the restrictors should not be altered.

The company also told tenants to notify building staff immediately if there is a problem with a window restrictor, and said all units would have their windows inspected Tuesday.

“We are deeply saddened by last evening’s incident, and our thoughts are with the child, family, and all those affected,” Homestead said in the tenant message.

No additional information about the child or the police review was available in the source material. Further details are expected from first responders or investigators if the circumstances of the fall are clarified.
