A senior is in critical condition and two Vancouver police officers were injured after an alleged vehicle-ramming incident in the West End.

A senior is in critical condition and two Vancouver police officers were injured after a driver allegedly rammed several vehicles and drove along a sidewalk in Vancouver’s West End on Friday morning, police said.

The Vancouver Police Department said officers were called around 5:30 a.m. PT to reports of a driver behaving erratically near Comox and Broughton streets and the Nelson Park dog area. The incident prompted a major emergency response and left part of Comox Street closed later in the morning.

Police said the vehicle hit numerous objects and struck a senior who was riding a motorized scooter. The senior was taken to hospital in critical condition, according to a VPD news release.

“Several witnesses nearby had to scramble to get out of the way of the suspect’s vehicle,” police said in the release.

The driver was stopped after allegedly ramming a responding police vehicle, destroying the cruiser and flipping the suspect’s vehicle, police said. Two officers were also taken to hospital. Police did not immediately provide details on the extent of their injuries.

The man was trapped in the vehicle and was freed by Vancouver Fire Rescue Services before being arrested near Comox and Bute streets, according to police. Multiple ambulances responded to the scene.

VPD said mental health and drug use issues are possible factors in the incident. Police had not announced charges in the captured report.

Comox Street between Thurlow and Bute streets remained closed to the public as of 9:45 a.m. PT, police said. Further updates are expected as investigators assess the crash scene and the injured senior’s condition.
