Veteran cars left Hyde Park on Sunday, Nov. 1, for the annual London to Brighton Veteran Car Run, a 97-kilometre journey to the south coast, Euronews reported.
The run marked 140 years since Karl Benz introduced his Patent-Motorwagen, which is widely regarded as the first production car. Some of the vehicles travelled at just 12 to 20 mph, according to Euronews.
One car broke down on The Mall, which Euronews said showed the mechanical challenges of driving such early models.
Shaun Harborne, who drove a 1901 Renault Type D, described the vehicles as fragile. He said the suspension, brakes, clutch and gearbox all need careful handling.
Karl-Heinz Jungbeck travelled from Munich in a 1903 Lacoste & Battmann. He said the event gives a taste of the adventure motorists would have experienced more than a century ago.
Euronews said driving a car from the early days of motoring takes patience and a good understanding of its mechanics, and that for participants the run is as much about the experience as the destination.
