England and Ghana meet Tuesday in a 2026 FIFA World Cup Group L match with a direct prize at stake: the winner will move into the round of 32.
The match is scheduled for 4 p.m. local time, or 21:00 GMT, at Gillette Stadium. England and Ghana both enter on three points after winning their opening matches, leaving Croatia and Panama without points in the group.
A fast start, but different questions
England opened with a 4-2 win over Croatia, a result powered by goals from Harry Kane, Jude Bellingham and Marcus Rashford. The performance reinforced England’s attacking depth, though conceding twice also kept attention on the team’s defensive balance.
Ghana began with a tighter 1-0 victory over Panama. The Black Stars are trying to reach the knockout stage for the first time since 2010, when they made a run to the quarterfinals.
The expanded 48-team World Cup has introduced a round of 32. The top two teams from each of the 12 groups advance, along with the eight best third-placed teams, making early group points especially valuable.
Prediction and matchup
Opta’s pre-match model makes England the clear favourite, giving Thomas Tuchel’s side a 78.8 percent chance of winning. Ghana are listed at 7.9 percent, with a 13.3 percent chance of a draw.
England and Ghana have met only once before, a 1-1 friendly draw in March 2011. This will be their first competitive meeting, and Ghana’s Antoine Semenyo is expected to be a central threat in attack.
Ghana coach Carlos Queiroz framed the matchup as one that should not require extra motivation. “When you’re about to play against England, France or Germany, you don’t need to say anything to the players,” he said. “They’re fully motivated.”
Team news and likely lineups
Tuchel said England had no injury problems before the match. Bukayo Saka, who had been dealing with an Achilles tendon issue, trained at full level and was described by Tuchel as pain-free, though the coach did not confirm whether he would start.
For Ghana, Thomas Partey is available to be in the United States for the England match after missing the opener against Panama in Toronto because he was unable to travel to Canada following a refused visa application. Partey faces rape and sexual assault allegations in the United Kingdom and has denied the charges.
Queiroz also said Ghana would make a late decision on goalkeeper Lawrence Ati-Zigi, who was forced off injured during the win over Panama.
England’s predicted lineup is Pickford; James, Konsa, Stones, O’Reilly; Anderson, Rice; Madueke, Bellingham, Gordon; Kane. Ghana’s projected lineup is Asare; Senaya, Adjetey, Opoku, Mensah; Yirenkyi, Partey, Sulemana; Nuamah, Ayew, Semenyo.
With both teams already holding one win, the match is less about recovery than acceleration. England can confirm their expected progress; Ghana can turn a strong start into a statement result.
