The Transportation Security Administration is offering a May discount on TSA PreCheck for younger travelers, cutting $20 from the signup fee for first-time applicants ages 30 and under.
The promotion starts Friday and applies to new enrollees only, according to the agency. With the discount, a five-year TSA PreCheck membership will cost $56.75 or $65, depending on how a traveler enrolls. Standard enrollment typically costs between $79.95 and $85.
The agency is pitching the offer ahead of the summer travel season, with college and high school graduates among the travelers it hopes to reach. PreCheck is designed to move approved passengers through airport security faster by giving them access to dedicated screening lanes at participating airports nationwide.
How the discount works
Travelers can enroll through one of three authorized providers: CLEAR, IDEMIA or Telos. The process begins online, but applicants must complete enrollment in person before they receive a Known Traveler Number, which is then entered when booking flights so PreCheck status appears on boarding passes.
TSA says confirmation generally takes about three to five days. The discount does not apply to renewals or to travelers who have previously enrolled.
What PreCheck changes at the airport
PreCheck members usually face shorter waits at security checkpoints and can keep compliant liquids and electronics inside their bags. They are also generally allowed to keep belts and light jackets on during screening.
The savings arrive as air travel costs remain under pressure. The CBS report cited higher jet fuel costs amid the Iran war as a factor behind rising summer fares, even as demand has stayed strong. Kayak data cited in the report showed the average U.S. domestic round-trip economy ticket in mid-April at $358, up $55 from the same period last year, while the average international round trip from the U.S. was $1,074, up $115.
For eligible younger travelers, the offer lowers the upfront price of PreCheck, but only during the May promotion window and only for first-time enrollment.
