Bonnie Tyler remains seriously ill but stable in a hospital in Faro, Portugal, after emergency intestinal surgery last week, her spokesman told the BBC.
The 74-year-old Welsh singer, best known for Total Eclipse of the Heart , was taken to hospital on Wednesday and placed in an induced coma following the operation. Her spokesman said doctors were still optimistic about her recovery.
“As of this morning, Bonnie remains seriously ill but stable in hospital in Faro, however, her doctors are still positive that she will make a full recovery,” the spokesman said. He added that another statement would be issued when there was further news on her condition.
Support has been shared widely on Tyler’s Facebook page, where a Friday post thanked fans for the “incredible outpouring of love and well wishes” received over recent days.
Messages also came from fellow musicians. Guitarist Ed Poole said he and the rest of Tyler’s band “are hoping and praying that she pulls through.” Katrina Leskanich, of Katrina and the Waves, urged Tyler to “make a speedy recovery and come back rocking,” while Gloria Gaynor wrote: “Wishing you a swift recovery, Bonnie!”
Tyler grew up in Neath and became one of Wales’s most recognisable pop voices. Total Eclipse of the Heart , released in 1983, reached number one in both the UK and the United States and earlier this year passed one billion streams on Spotify.
Her other hits include her 1976 debut single, Lost in France . She represented the UK at the Eurovision Song Contest in 2013, finishing 19th out of 26 acts, and was made an MBE in 2023 for services to music.
No further medical details were released. Tyler’s spokesman said updates would be provided when more information is available.
