The 2026 World Cup group stage opens June 11 with a record 72 matches, creating a crowded early schedule and several standout fixtures.

The 2026 FIFA World Cup begins June 11 with the busiest group stage in tournament history: 72 matches spread across more than two weeks, from June 11 to June 27.

That expanded schedule gives fans more football than ever, but it also creates a viewing challenge. Matches will be played across the United States, Canada and Mexico, and for supporters in the United Kingdom, several England and Scotland fixtures are set for late-night kickoffs, prompting some fans to plan annual leave, flexible working or recovery mornings around the tournament.

With a crowded opening phase, five fixtures stand out for their mix of history, stakes, star power and group-table consequences.

Brazil’s meeting with Morocco in Group C is the early headline act. The five-time champions open against the team that became one of the defining stories of Qatar 2022, when Morocco reached the semifinals.

Brazil enter the tournament with Carlo Ancelotti in charge and a squad that still features elite attacking talent, including Vinicius Junior. Morocco, listed among the African heavyweights, bring their own high-profile names, including Brahim Diaz and Achraf Hakimi. The match is scheduled for June 13 in East Rutherford, New Jersey, at 6 p.m. local time, or 22:00 GMT.

Netherlands against Japan opens Group F with two teams carrying very different World Cup burdens. The Dutch are still chasing a first men’s World Cup title, while Japan have built a reputation for making favorites uncomfortable.

At the 2022 tournament, Japan beat both Germany and Spain in the group stage before going out to Croatia on penalties in the round of 16. This match is scheduled for June 14 at Dallas Stadium in Arlington, Texas, at 3 p.m. local time, or 20:00 GMT. With Sweden and Tunisia also in the group, the result could shape the race for first place from the outset.

France and Senegal have not met for more than two decades, but their last World Cup encounter remains one of the tournament’s famous shocks. Senegal beat defending champion France 1-0 in the opening match of the 2002 World Cup in Japan and South Korea.

The rematch comes in Group I, which also includes Norway and Iraq. That makes the June 16 fixture in East Rutherford more than a historical callback: it could be one of the decisive games in one of the group stage’s most demanding sections. Kickoff is listed for 3 p.m. local time, or 19:00 GMT.

England’s meeting with Croatia in Group L reprises a fixture that still carries weight from the 2018 World Cup, when Croatia came from behind to beat England in the semifinal and reach the final.

The teams have played three times since then, with England winning twice and one match ending scoreless. This version also gives Thomas Tuchel a major tournament test as England coach. Ghana and Panama complete the group, making the June 17 match in Arlington, Texas, a likely marker for who controls the section. Kickoff is scheduled for 3 p.m. local time, or 20:00 GMT.

The last day of the group stage brings one of the most in-demand fixtures of the opening round. Colombia and Portugal close Group K on June 27 at Miami Stadium, with Uzbekistan and DR Congo also in the group.

The match is listed as sold out, and recognized resale sites have priced tickets between $2,200 and $3,000, making it the most expensive group-stage fixture cited in the published guide. Colombia’s qualifying form and attacking options, including Luis Diaz and James Rodriguez, give the matchup obvious appeal. Portugal are described as the favorite, but the game could decide first place in the group.

The tournament is also unfolding under scrutiny away from the pitch. FIFA has faced pressure from climate advocates, doctors and players over its partnership with Saudi oil producer Aramco and over heat risks for players and fans. FIFA has said it has heat-mitigation measures in place and defended its commercial partnerships as part of its funding model for the global game.

For viewers, the immediate challenge is simpler: choosing where to look first in a group stage built for scale. The early answer is New Jersey, Texas and Miami, where several of the opening round’s clearest storylines are set to converge.
