Christian Eriksen collapsed during Denmark’s friendly against Ukraine, prompting the match to be abandoned, but officials said he was conscious and doing well.
Christian Eriksen was conscious and feeling well after collapsing during Denmark’s international friendly against Ukraine on Sunday, the Danish Football Union said.
The match at Odense Stadium was abandoned after Eriksen went down near midfield in the 64th minute, with Denmark leading Ukraine 2-1. Medical personnel rushed onto the field, and players from both teams later accompanied him as he was taken to an ambulance, according to the report.
The episode immediately drew concern because Eriksen, 34, suffered a cardiac arrest on the field during Denmark’s European Championship match against Finland in June 2021. That incident required CPR before he was taken to a hospital and stabilized.
After the 2021 collapse, Eriksen was fitted with an implantable cardioverter-defibrillator, a device designed to help restore a normal heart rhythm when needed. Denmark team doctor Morten Boesen said after Sunday’s incident that Eriksen’s device was functioning properly.
“He was briefly unconscious, but regained consciousness very quickly, and we were quickly in contact with him,” Boesen said in a statement cited by the report.
Boesen said Denmark remained in contact with Eriksen and hospital doctors, and added that Eriksen had asked him to tell teammates he was OK.
Eriksen has played for Tottenham and Manchester United in the English Premier League and currently plays for VfL Wolfsburg in Germany’s 2. Bundesliga. The cause of Sunday’s collapse was not immediately clear from the available report.
